MEDIA RELEASE

Working families are to be given the right to request flexible working arrangements following an independent review of the Fair Work Act.

In response to the Fair Work Act review the Government has announced their decision to propose amendments to the Fair Work Act Statement which will give parents with school aged children the right to negotiate flexible working hours with their employers, a right currently only held by parents with the responsibility of children under school age or a child with a disability under 18.

The Review Panel also stated that many workers were not aware of their right to request flexible arrangements.

Kellie McNamara, CEO of Coastwide Child and Family Services, has expressed her support for these proposals, “at Coastwide Child and Family we work towards providing a family friendly working environment for our staff and for our community. It’s so important to look at providing initiatives which support working families.”

As flexible working arrangements become more available there will increased demand for innovative childcare arrangements. Family Day Care Educators offer parents a flexible family-centered option when choosing childcare.

“Our parents and Family Day Care Educators work together to provide childcare which works for families”, said Kellie, “the Review’s recommendations will support parents to re-enter the workforce and the flexibility of family day care can respond to parents needs.”

Family Day Care educators operate their service from their own homes and can be flexible to suit changing patterns of work.

“By using the Family Day Care service for my daughter I know I can arrange my working hours around my employers and my family’s needs,” said one parent user of Family Day Care. “I also really appreciate the relief service which Gosford and Peninsula Family Day Care provide when my educator is not available.”
